Map charts have gotten even easier with geography data types. Simply input a list of geographic values, such as country, state, county, city, postal code, and so on, then select your list and go to the Data tab > Data Types > Geography. Excel will automatically convert your data to a geography data type, and will include properties relevant to that data that you can display in a map chart. In the following example, we've converted a list of countries to geography data types, then selected the Tax revenue (%) field from the Add Column control to use in our map.

The list contains information about countries in the world. It includes details such as their population, area and population density. The list can be obtained in various file formats such as MS Excel, CSV, PDF, and a compressed file that contains all the formats.

With this spreadsheet (version 8.0 already!) you can therefore start counting countries like a pro. It offers full transparency and you can modify it yourself any way you want. If you cannot wait to start, head straight for that download button below. If you are eager for some context, then keep reading.

Travelling to all countries is EXTREMELY HARD. There are only about 260 people in the world who claim to have visited them all. They are listed as so-called UN Masters on Nomad Mania, a global authority and well organised community of travellers counting countries.

This is where it gets complicated. Different lists might not only use different definitions, some also use different names for similar countries. This way, mapping the differences between the definitions becomes a real puzzle.

I hope I got you excited to start counting your visited countries like a pro. Just download my Excel spreadsheet through this link, preferably using a laptop or computer to avoid errors. Read the instructions as you go through the different worksheets in the file.

Hello, I have an excel sheet with multiple columns containing different information. In the drop down list for each column, multiple values can be selected. How do I pull data from a drop down list with multiple values?

You are being provided herewith the original detailed data files which comprise the WHO Mortality DataBase (MDB). Due to the large size of these files, they are provided in ASCII (comma separated values) format to facilitate the download process. You should import these data files into a Database Management System rather than spreadsheets. These are the basic underlying detailed data files, together with the necessary instructions, file structures, code reference tables, etc. for use by those who need access to the full level of detail for specific analyses. Instructions for importing the comma separated values files into Microsoft Access are listed in Annex Table 3 of the "Documentation.zip" file. However users are strongly recommended not to try to import the data into spreadsheets because of the excessive number of records. There are over 2 million records in one data file.

Death registration coverage and cross-national differences in coding practices, particularly in the use of codes for ill-defined and unknown causes, must be taken into account to validly compare mortality rates for specific causes across countries. WHO-validated estimates of total deaths by cause, age and sex for WHO regions and subregions for 2004 and 2008 may be downloaded from the Burden of Disease website.

As part of its enforcement efforts, OFAC publishes a list of individuals and companies owned or controlled by, or acting for or on behalf of, targeted countries. It also lists individuals, groups, and entities, such as terrorists and narcotics traffickers designated under programs that are not country-specific. Collectively, such individuals and companies are called "Specially Designated Nationals" or "SDNs." Their assets are blocked and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from dealing with them. Read more information on Treasury's Sanctions Programs.

Select the data you wish to download from the fields below, then click download to proceed. Note that you must select at least one item from each list (at least one country, data type, and year). For an explanation of the data series used in the data download tool, please refer to the IIF Database Glossary.

After that, you select a cell for the 3rd dropdown (C2 in our case) and apply Excel Data Validation with the following formula (B2 is the cell with the second drop-down menu that contains a list of countries):

The most convenient and visual approach is to store the items for the first drop-down as table headers, and the items for the dependent dropdown as table data. The screenshot below illustrates the structure of my table, named exporters_tbl - the fruit names are table headers and a list of exporting countries is added under the corresponding fruit name.2. Create Excel namesNow that your source data is ready, it's time to set up named references that will dynamically retrieve the correct list from your table.

Note. When working with dynamic cascading drop down lists created with the above formulas, nothing prevents the user from changing the value in the first dropdown after making the selection in the second menu, as a result, the choices in the primary and secondary dropdowns may mismatch. You can block changes in the first box after a selection is made in the second one by using either VBA or complex formulas suggested in this tutorial. This is how you create an Excel data validation list based on the values of another list. Please feel free to download our sample workbooks to see the cascading drop-down lists in action. Thank you for reading!
